Jim spent 36 years with Environment Canada as a meteorologist, and has had the opportunity to manage the national operational, monitoring, and research components of the Meteorological Service of Canada. He was responsible for setting up the Canadian Hurricane Centre, and began a hurricane research program in Canada that involved flights into these powerful storms. He also represented Canada in Arctic international monitoring activities. His hurricane research is recognized internationally. In 2002, Jim was awarded the Patterson Medal in meteorology, and in 2013 he was presented with the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Jim is now involved in a variety of weather, climate, and flood mitigation related activities. He is the Atlantic representative of the Canadian Climate Forum, as well as the Halifax Chapter President of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. Other part-time employment activities include CBC Radio and the World Meteorological Organization; as well as partnership in a small company, Climaction Services.
