Andreas Siebert

Head of Geospatial Solutions at Munich Re

Andreas spent his early career in the geo-consultant industry as an expert for Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and satellite images working in various parts of the world. He subsequently pursued a spatial information and analysis specialization and in particular the development and installation of GIS, GPS and mapping tools in different institutions and international organizations. A geographer by initial profession, he has longstanding interests in natural risks, climate change, and risk assessment.

Since 1995 he is a member of Munich Re´s Geo Risks Research Team. His main interest has been the development of solutions and services to assist property underwriters and risk experts to manage their exposure to natural and man-made catastrophes by combining insurance information with (geo)scientific data.

Since 2004 he is heading the Geospatial Solutions Department at Munich Re, which is today part of Corporate Underwriting. In the last years, he was leading an innovation project focusing on the technical specifications and technical implementation of a global exposure platform and complementary analysis functions to support group-wide business needs.

Today the focus is on the linkage between business data and location intelligence. Based on new IT solutions (e.g. Hadoop, SAP Hana, ArcGIS Portal) many innovations are aligned to geospatial analytics and data management, leveraging Big Data and other analytics initiatives in the insurance community.

In numerous lectures and articles in the geoscience and insurance community, he is stressing the benefit of geospatial and mapping solutions in the holistic risk management of natural hazards. Since 2009 he is a lecturer for “Risk management – Global and external Risks” at the University.
