Amy Avis
General Counsel and Chief of Recovery Services at Canadian Red Cross
Amy Avis has been with the Canadian Red Cross for over 10 years and holds two key roles as General Counsel and the Chief of Recovery Services. As General Counsel, Amy oversees a team of legal and risk professionals and her role includes compliance, critical incident management, personnel security and public policy. In her operational role as the Chief of Recovery Services, she oversees all grant programs including support to the not-for-profit sector and community organizations, as well as case management services for individuals, families and small businesses.
A recognized expert in her field, Amy is frequently asked to present on risk, legal, policy and compliance issues to other charities and humanitarian actors. Amy is a member of the Charities Directorate Technical Issues Working Group, and in 2015 represented the Canadian humanitarian sector in the global Financial Action Task Force consultations in London and Vienna.
During her over ten years with the Canadian Red Cross, Amy has supported the CRC’s major large-scale operations domestically and internationally including Fort McMurray Fires, BC Fires and most recently the COVID-19 response. This support has included successfully negotiating countless contracts and undertaken complex compliance audits across Canada and in South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.
